Make Every Day Earth Day! The choices we make every day can save energy and improve the environment. According to the US Department of energy, America needs cleaner, more diverse energy supplies to meet demand, address climate change, and reduce dependence on foreign sources. Did you know that the US is the world’s single largest contributor to global warming, with the average annual emissions of 19.6 tons per person? WHEW! That’s nearly five times the world average of 3.9 tons per person. The impacts of climate change are too great to ignore, and we must do everything in our power to protect our future. Let’s join together to do our part in saving our planet! Check out these energy tips from Philter: |
• Water Heaters • Automatic Door Closers • Heating and Cooling Systems
|
Water Heaters Lowering the setting from the usual 140 degrees Fahrenheit to 120 (the minimum to guard against bacterial growth) is sufficient and safer, as 140 can scald. And for every 10 degrees the temperature is lowered, you save 3 to 5 percent in energy costs, says Lynn Clement of Focus on Energy, a Wisconsin efficiency program. |

Automatic Door Closers Install them on storm doors. “If doors don’t shut all the way, you might as well leave them open,” says Charlie Szoradi, founder of Greenandsave.com, a home-efficiency consultancy in Philadelphia. “If you add an automatic closer and a gasket that seals the door shut, you’ll save at least $15 a year—more than double that in extreme climates.” Closers run $3 to $13; gaskets, $8. |

Heating and Cooling Systems If your furnace or central air-conditioning unit is more than 10 years old or does not work well, replace it with an Energy Star-rated one. And be sure to have it installed by a certified HVAC (heating, venting, and air-conditioning) contractor; for guidelines on finding one, go to acca.org. Replacing the central air-conditioning unit alone (which costs thousands) “can cut your annual bill by up to $200,” says Jonathan Passe of the EPA. |
