GEOTHERMAL TECHNOLOGY: Plug into planet earth!

Homeowners across North America are searching for better ways to get more out of their energy dollar.  Many have found that a geothermal heat pump can help.  Geothermal energy not only costs less to operate than any other heating and cooling system, but it also helps preserve our natural resources and lessens our dependency on fossil fuels.

A Geothermal heat pump or “ground-source” heat pump only uses electricity to operate equipment.  Water is used as the heat transfer medium and the earth supplies the clean renewable energy.   In the winter heat is extracted from the ground and moved to your home.  In the summer the process is reversed and indoor heat is absorbed from your home and transferred to the mild temperature of the earth.

For every one unit of energy purchased to operate a geothermal unit, it delivers four to five units of energy and the energy from the earth is free.  In many scenarios, a geothermal system is significantly less expensive to operate than ordinary heating and cooling systems.  Geothermal systems can save up to 70% in heating costs, up to 50% in cooling costs, and around 30% - 50% in hot water costs.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Geothermal systems are “the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost effective space conditioning system s available today”.  The U.S. department of Energy (DOE) predicts that electricity priced will remain stable over the next twenty years, allowing some increase for inflation.  Fuel oil, natural gas, and propane gas have begun rising at a much higher rate.  Geothermal technology is a great solution to global warming and high energy costs.

HYBRID SOLUTIONS: Freewatt Systems 

While heating your home, the Freewatt System, powered by Honda, also produces 1.2kW of lost cost green electricity.  This electricity offsets your electric usage and results in a significant decrease in your electric bill.

While generating electricity the Freewatt recycles heat that is normally lost in the generation process.  Each Freewatt system uses natural gas or propane and includes a high-efficiency Energy Star rated furnace or boiler that is sized for your family’s comfort.

Freewatt furnaces range from 60K to 120K BTU’s with 95% efficiency, variable speed technology, and direct vent combustion.  Boilers are fully modulating, 95% efficient, direct vent hot water systems with capacities up to 200K BTU’s.

HYBRID SOLUTIONS: Heat Pumps

Hybrid Heating Systems are more comfortable.  They use electric heat pumps during cool weather and furnaces during extreme temperatures.  Heat pumps deliver a consistent “mellow” heat that many people prefer.  Furnaces by contrast, deliver intermittent blasts of hot air during mild weather. 

Of course, when it gets really cold, a furnace is needed to provide the tasty feeling of the higher temperature air a furnace provides.  Hybrid heating systems use each type of heating technology when appropriate to deliver all-season comfort. 

During moderate weather, electric heat pumps are more economical to operate than furnaces.  As the temperature drops, the furnace takes over and maintains your home at a preset comfort level.  Because a heat pump also provides cool, indoor comfort when it’s hot outside, a Hybrid Heat System is truly a year-round comfort solution.  Wilson Brothers often recommends the Bryant Hybrid Heat System with a 13 - 20 SEER rating and a choice of programmable thermostats.

A hybrid heating system can save between 30% and 50% on energy costs.  All-season comfort and energy savings – a win-win!
