Cooling Systems

At Wilson Brothers, we pride ourselves on providing solutions that are based on customer needs.  We don’t rush our home visits; we ask lots of questions to be sure we have the whole picture; and we listen intently to your answers.  Then we review our notes and confer with our technicians.  We don’t provide cookie-cutter recommendations – what’s good for your neighbor may not be the best solution for you.

Here are examples of some problem situations Wilson Brothers has been asked to solve recently.  Check out our Technical Corner for detailed information and specifications on the brands and models recommended by Wilson Brothers HVAC, Inc.

     •  CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING: Replacing an inefficient central air system
     •  HEAT PUMP: Our New England temperature fluctuations
     •  DUCTLESS AIR CONDITIONING: Short but hazy, hot and humid summers

Central Air Conditioning: Replacing an inefficient central air system

One of our customers had a 15-year-old home which had a central air conditioning system with an efficiency rating of only 9 to 10 SEER.  It was noisy and their electric bills were out of sight in the summer.

Wilson Brothers recommended the installation of a replacement condenser with a 15 or 18 SEER rating.  Wilson Brothers also did a Manual J calculation to correctly size the new system.  It was discovered that the original cooling system was sized too large for the ductwork installed in the home.  The new American Standard cooling system was downsized by a half ton.  It was quieter, environmentally sound and reliable.  The high efficient cooling system saved $373 in energy costs the first year – (that’s 44% savings on what they were paying)!  In addition, the system was eligible for a tax credit of 30% of the installed cost (up to $1,500) and a $1,250 rebate from their Electric Company.

Heat Pump: Our New England temperature fluctuations

Here in New England, the temperature can be 36 degrees overnight and then rise to the upper 70s or low 80s the next day!  How do we avoid using precious oil or gas to heat the home during these fluctuations?  Our customer didn’t want to switch to heat when they would only have to turn the air conditioner on later in the day.

Wilson Brothers recommended and installed an Evolution series Heat Pump by Bryant.  Don’t let the name fool you – this is an air cooling system, but it also produces heat!  It is a hybrid system that is very popular and highly efficient.

Added to the existing forced hot air system, the heat pump provides a steady, even comfort zone with its two-stage compressor system.  It cools in the summer while removing excess humidity in the indoor air.  And when the temperature dips, it warms the home with quiet reliable electrical operation, saving oil or gas.  In addition, the system was eligible for a tax credit of 30% of the installed cost (up to $1,500) and a $600 rebate from their Electric Company.

Ductless Air Conditioning: Short but hazy, hot, humid summers

They may be short, but New England summers can be extremely uncomfortable during the hazy, hot, and humid days.  Wilson Brothers was contacted by a customer whose family spent most of its time in the large family room of its colonial home.  They wanted to cool that room and the adjacent kitchen and dining area but didn’t want to install central air conditioning.

Wilson Brothers recommended a Ductless Cooling System by Mitsubishi – a slim wall-mounted unit that we installed high on the family room wall.  Its ability to cool large areas with no internal ductwork made it perfect for this family.  Available with a high-energy efficient rating of 25 SEER, the Mitsubishi is very quiet.  Its optional heat pump is ideal for taking the chill out of autumn and early spring mornings, providing all-season comfort.   In addition, the system was eligible for a tax credit of 30% of the installed cost (up to $1,500) and a $500 rebate from their Electric Company.
